September 11, 2006

On this the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Erica and myself visited the site now known to the world as Ground Zero, for the first time. It was a surreal experience, being in the place where once two colossal edifices stood. With Br. Ed as our guide, I found my heart beating faster as we approached the site. I was sad and hesitant about visiting this place of violence and grief. But today was not a day of mourning, but to honor and celebrate the people that lost their lives on 9/11. And what came out of this as a result was that the people ‘shall rise from the ashes’ and keep on going. The city keeps on going through its friendly lifestyle- willing to help out a stranger in need of directions or honking at you to let you know they won’t run you over. NYC is not all about brash rudeness or fast talking attitude. Resiliency and hope is shown through these acts and more, by these everyday people- men and women, young and old. I am very grateful for being part of New York City- a city that keeps on going.
